KURE BEACH COMMUNITY CENTER GARDEN LECTURE SERIES THIS SATURDAY!!!

On Saturday, March 10^th from 9:30-10:30 am, the Kure Beach Community Center will host the first in an ongoing series of educational lectures by the NC Cooperative Extension’s Speakers Bureau Programs. Speakers from the extension’s Master Gardeners program will address a variety of plant-related topics, which can help average homeowners manage their landscapes. The center’s first presentation is titled “Gardening in New Hanover County,” which offers gardening tips for managing plants in this challenging Cape Fear environment. Future lecture topics include turf management, tree and shrub selection, native and drought-resistant plants, environmentally friendly pest management, best practices for vegetable and fruit gardens and container gardening. Dates for those lectures will be announced. The KB Community Center is located at 118 N. 3^rd Avenue in Kure Beach. A $5 donation would be appreciated to defray costs. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS MARCH 11

This Sunday, March 11, marks the beginning of daylight savings time. Don’t forget to set your clocks forward by 1 hour before you go to bed on Saturday night. While you’re changing your clocks, it’s also a great opportunity to change the batteries in your household smoke alarms.

WATERCOLOR CLASSES BEGIN MARCH 14

Ken Withrow, awarding winning artist and Kure Beach resident, is offering watercolor classes at the Kure Beach Community Center beginning Wednesday, March 14. Beginner class is held from 9:30-11:30 am and Intermediate class is held from 12:30-2:30 pm. The 4-week sessions cost $30 per person. Register and pay at the first class. A list of supplies needed for these classes is available on this website under “Town Venues>Parks & Rec>Watercolor Class,” or you can obtain the list at Town Hall.

OPERATIONS MEDICINE DROP “TAKE BACK” EVENT ON MARCH 24

Prescription poisoning is on the rise in North Carolina. Operation Medicine Drop's "Take Back" event helps prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse while protecting our waters. Please bring any prescription or over-the-counter medicines that you are no longer using or that have expired to the Kure Beach Police Department on Saturday, March 24 between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm. Alternate members needed to serve on the Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment is in need of two alternate members. The Board acts in a quasi-judicial manner by hearing appeals to decisions

of the Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer relating to zoning and land use ordinances and decides whether a variance from the ordinance is granted. The Board meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 pm, only if there is a case to be heard and also meets in January for an organizational meeting and training.

Anyone wishing to serve as an alternate on the Board of Adjustment will need to become familiar with Town zoning and land use ordinances. Applications are available at Town Hall, Mon.–Fri. from 9 am to 5 pm and on the Town’s website at www.townofkurebeach.org under ‘Committees.’

GARBAGE AND RECYCLE CALENDAR POSTED ON TOWN WEBSITE

A calendar listing the Garbage and Recycle pickup dates for residents has been posted on the Town’s website under Town News. You can also find the calendar posted under the Residents area (new and current) of the website.

VEHICLE TAX PAYMENT DEADLINE MARCH 30

This is a reminder to our residents who have not yet paid their $5 Kure Beach Vehicle tax (for a vehicle decal), that the deadline to pay your tax is Friday, March 30th! If you wait until this date to pay your tax, please try to arrive at Town Hall no later than 4:30 pm to do so. Have your vehicle registration and photo ID with you, along with your payment in the form of check or cash. Beginning Monday, April 2, there will be an additional $10 penalty fee added to the tax, increasing the cost of a decal to $15 per vehicle. 

FREE DEBRIS PICKUP ON APRIL 12  

The Town of Kure Beach is offering No Charge Debris Removal on Thursday, April 12. This is a one-day special service.

The Town will NOT accept the following items:

Paints & pesticides                 Shingles

Gas cylinders                          Batteries

Tires                                        Oil drums

Used or mixed oil                    Bio-medical waste

Construction debris

We will pick up electronics (televisions, computers, printers, etc.), but they must be separate from other items. Vegetation must be of the non-commercial yard debris type, not vegetation from lot clearing. Brush will need to be separated from all other types of debris and should not be bagged. Please have your debris in the right of way in front of your home by 7:00 am on Thursday. If you have any questions about pick up, please call the Public Works Department at 910-458-5816.

BUS TRIP TO BROOKGREEN GARDENS – SOLD OUT!!!

If you’re just seeing this notice and would like to be put on our waiting list, please call Town Hall at 910-458-8216 and give us your contact information. This is for the bus trip to Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC, on April 10, 2012. The price of admission, the private tour, the bus and driver fees come to $32 per person, and there’s an optional 45-minute boat cruise for an extra $7. This option features a pontoon boat ride through tributary creeks of the Waccamaw River, past abandoned rice fields (now home to alligators, waterfowl and other wildlife). Did you know that Brookgreen Gardens has the largest outdoor sculpture garden in the country? It also has walking trails, a zoo, an arboretum, a museum, a gift shop and more.
