KURE BEACH MOSQUITO SPRAYING - JUNE 29 & JUNE 30

New Hanover County began spraying against mosquitoes in Kure Beach yesterday and will continue spraying today between the hours of 6:00pm and 12:00 midnight. For questions, please call NHC Mosquito Control at 910-798-6586.

HURRICANE INFORMATION SESSIONS

The town is sponsoring Hurricane information sessions at Kure Beach Town Hall on the following dates. The town’s Emergency Response Coordinator, David Heglar, will lead the session. We encourage you to come and ask questions to help you with your personal emergency planning.

FIREWORKS SCHEDULE

If you’re looking for fireworks this coming weekend, Carolina Beach will have its fireworks display on Sunday night, July 3, at the CB Boardwalk. Fireworks on Monday night, July 4, can be seen in downtown Wilmington along the Cape Fear River across from the Battleship North Carolina.

TOWN HALL CLOSED ON MONDAY, JULY 4!!!

GARBAGE PICKUP WILL BE DELAYED BY ONE DAY. If your garbage is normally picked up on Monday, it will be picked up on Tuesday. If your garbage is normally picked up on Tuesday, it will be picked up on Wednesday.

RECYCLE PICKUP WILL BE ON MONDAY, AS USUAL!

Remember that garbage carts and recycle bins need to be out at your curb by 7:00 am, or pickup is not guaranteed. Carts & bins must be pulled back to your home by 12-midnight after pickup to avoid being sited for violating Town ordinance.

OCEAN FRONT PARK GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY, JULY 16 @ 1PM

     The Town is pleased to announce that construction of the Ocean Front Park will begin the week of July 11, 2011.  The Town has contracted with Integrity Builders LLC. The park site will include an open air pavilion with a stage area for concerts and educational events; a public restroom; a small playground for young children; a rain garden; walking path with memorial pavers, native plantings and swings and benches. The park site will also include an underground storm water infiltration system that will retain approximately four blocks of storm water.

     Additionally, as part of the construction, the Town will replace the paving on Atlantic Avenue in front of the park with asphalt sloped to pervious pavers in the parking spaces for storm water management. The Town will also replace the two blocks of existing boardwalk from K to L Avenue.

     Beginning July 11, 2011, all parking on the west side of Atlantic Avenue in front of the park site will be removed and this area will be used as a construction staging area. Also, five parking spaces on the east side of Atlantic Avenue will be closed off. The Town has identified seventy-six (76) new parking spaces two and a half (2 ½) blocks north of the pier and will be placing signage at these locations.

     We apologize in advance for any inconvenience construction during the summer months may cause. Atlantic Avenue and the boardwalk will remain open as much as is possible during this time. Due to circumstances beyond the Town’s control and grant timelines, construction must begin. The Town anticipates no work will be done to Atlantic Avenue or the boardwalk until after the Labor Day weekend.

     The Town will be offering the opportunity in the near future to contribute to the park by sponsoring a bench, swing, garden and or plantings, memorial pavers and general donations for future additions or upkeep.

NEW FEES AND TAX RATE IN EFFECT JULY 1, 2011

With the adoption of the budget for fiscal year 2011-2012, the following new fees are in effect July 1, 2011:

Tax rate:

16-¼ cents per $100 value. Tax rate increased by 2 ¾ cents. Tax rate was 13 ½ cents per $100 value.

New fees:

$3.00 - residential water and sewer minimum rate increase per month

$4.00 - commercial water and sewer minimum rate increase per month

$4.00 – storm water fee increase per month

$30 - water service technician site visit

$10 – if customer fails to meet technician at the site when scheduled

$30 – customer request for meter to be read, checked, turned on or off

          (waived if problem found with meter)

$25 – water cut ons outside of working hours

$50 – special meter tests (waived if problem with meter)

$25 – returned check fee

$10 – account past due fee

TOWN TO “ROLL OUT” NEW RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING CONTAINERS

     The Town Council is pleased to see so many residents putting their recyclable refuse in their recycle bins rather than throwing it in their regular garbage. This makes it so that the recyclable materials don’t go into our regular garbage stream, thus keeping the town’s tipping fees to the County more manageable and helping the environment at the same time.

     During the month of August 2011, we will swap our recycle containers from the 18-gallon bins we currently use, to 65-gallon roll-out carts. The carts are smaller than the Town’s garbage carts, but they will hold 3-½ times more recycling material than the current recycle bins hold. Waste Management and a Town representative will begin delivering the roll out carts to each Kure Beach residence beginning Monday, August 1^st. The old recycle bins will be collected at this time. However, if you have paid for a recycle bin and wish to keep it, DO NOT put it out with your recyclables in August. Once your roll-out cart has been delivered, Waste Management won’t pick up anything placed in the small bins. All recycling will need to be put in the roll-out cart from that point on.

     With the switch to the larger cart, we ask that you not put out additional boxes, plastic bins, and so forth for overflow recyclables. If you find that you have overflow each week, you should obtain a 2nd cart or take your overflow to the County’s recycle center at the Moose Lodge on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington. If you decide one roll-out cart is not enough for your household, contact Town Hall at 458-8216 to          request another cart. The recycling fee is $4.52 per cart, per household, per month. There will be an additional $4.52 charge per month for each additional cart you have, whether it is put out each week or not. Because there will be no charge to obtain a cart, all carts will remain the property of Waste Management.

     Recycling will continue to be picked up every Monday, including Monday holidays (except if Christmas falls on a Monday). If you do not         receive a roll-out cart by August but notice that your neighbors have theirs, please call Town Hall and let us know.

REMINDER TO HOMEOWNERS – CONTRACTORS NEED PRIVILEGE LICENSES

Our Building Inspector would like to remind Kure Beach homeowners/residents that, if you plan to have work done on your property by contractors, please have them come by Town Hall to acquire a Privilege License to do business in Kure Beach, if they don’t already have one. Every person, firm or corporation engaging in a business activity, trade, service or profession is required to obtain a privilege license annually. This license entitles the bearer to conduct business within the town of Kure Beach. The license is valid from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. It is illegal to conduct business without this license and is punishable by law. Contact John Batson if you have any questions 458-6535. 

STATE FAIR BUS TRIP – ANYONE INTERESTED????

The NC State Fair in Raleigh takes place October 14-24, 2011, and Seniors aged 65+ will be admitted FREE of charge. There is an admission fee for all others, except children 5 and under. Kure Beach Parks & Recreation is planning a bus trip to the fair, but we need to hear from you before final plans are made. Can we count on you to join us for this bus trip? We plan to leave from Town Hall at 9:00 am on Thursday, October 20, and the bus will take everyone back to Town Hall, leaving the fair at 4:00 pm. You will be free to enjoy the fair at your own pace. A fee of about $15-$20 per person will be charged for bus transportation, depending on the cost of the bus. You will be responsible for all other costs at the fair. Please respond via email if you’d be interested in going, and give us an idea of how many people you’d like to bring with you. Once it has been determined that there is enough interest in the trip, we’ll schedule it and send out a notice.
