OPERATION MEDICINE DROP “TAKE BACK” EVENT THIS SATURDAY, MARCH 24 Prescription poisoning is on the rise in North Carolina. Operation Medicine Drop's "Take Back" event helps prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse while protecting our waters. Please bring any prescription or over-the-counter medicines that you are no longer using or that have expired to the Kure Beach Police Department on Saturday, March 24 between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm. CALLING ALL AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS (and pros)!!! By the end of summer, the Town hopes to launch an updated website and we’re looking for photos from you of Kure Beach sunrises, sunsets, the pier, food from one of our restaurants, wildlife, gardens or other nature, fishermen, people having fun on the beach, etc., to use for our website. If you’d like to share your photos, please save them onto a CD for us and bring it to Town Hall. Please don’t email photos to us as photos use a lot of computer memory and might overwhelm the Town’s email server. Make sure the CD you bring us is a copy and not your original. Put your name, phone number and email address on the CD or CD cover, if you want your CD back. If you’re unable to save your photos onto a CD but you have some photos you think we’d like, please call Town Hall at 910-458-8216 and ask to speak with Nancy Hewitt. Although we will not be able to give you “name credit” for the photos on our website, we hope you’ll consider it rewarding to help represent the Town’s beauty and charm to the general public.
PERMANENT MEETING CHANGE NOTICE - MARKETING COMMITTEE On Tuesday, March 20, 2012, the Kure Beach Marketing Committee voted to permanently change its meeting date to the 4th Tuesday of each month. The next meeting of the committee will be held at Town Hall on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 11:00 am. These meetings are open to the public and all interested persons are encouraged to attend.
VEHICLE TAX PAYMENT DEADLINE IS MARCH 30 This is a reminder to our residents who have not yet paid their $5 Kure Beach Vehicle tax (for a vehicle decal), that the deadline to pay your tax is Friday, March 30! If you wait until this date to pay your tax, please try to arrive at Town Hall no later than 4:30 pm to do so. Have your vehicle registration and photo ID with you, along with your payment in the form of check or cash. Beginning Monday, April 2, there will be an additional $10 penalty fee added to the tax, increasing the cost of a decal to $15 per vehicle.
ANNUAL NHC HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY ON SATURDAY, MARCH 31 Rain or shine, this event will be held on Saturday, March 31, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Wilmington International Airport’s Customs Building at 1921 Hall Drive. The following items will be ACCEPTED: auto batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, cell phones, pesticides and herbicides, household cleaners, electronics (TV’s Computers, etc), fluorescent tubes, rechargeable household batteries, fuels, smoke detectors, fertilizers, solvents and mercury (thermostats/thermometers). NOT ACCEPTED: Ammunition, medications, appliances, paint, asbestos, propane gas cylinders, commercial and business waste, sharps (hypodermic needles), furniture, tires, industrial materials and trash.
NO DOGS ON BEACH BEGINNING APRIL 1 Our Police Chief wants to remind everyone about the Town’s ordinance against dogs on the Kure Beach strand. According to the Town’s ordinance, it shall be unlawful for any person to have or allow their dog to be upon the beach strand of Kure Beach during the period of April 1 through September 30 of each year. Offenders of this ordinance are subject to a civil citation in the amount of $150 for the first offense and the second offense shall subject the offender to a misdemeanor charge. Our police force is authorized to strictly enforce this and other laws within the Town. Please consider others when visiting the beach strand and obey all Kure Beach laws.
NEW TENNIS SESSION BEGINS APRIL 2 & 3 – SUNDAY EVENING CLASSES BEGIN APRIL 15 Sunday evening tennis classes are back! Please welcome Susan Kight to the Kure Beach Tennis program. Susan, a PTR certified pro, will be teaching tennis classes on Sunday evenings, beginning April 15. To sign up for the Sunday evening classes or any other tennis classes, please go to: www.PleasureIslandTennis.info. The next session of the weekday tennis program, taught by Billie Fitzsimons, starts April 2/3. Please remember tennis classes are on a first registered, first served basis. FREE DEBRIS PICKUP ON THURSDAY, APRIL 12 The Town of Kure Beach is offering No Charge Debris Removal on Thursday, April 12. This is a one-day special service. The Town will NOT accept the following items: Paints & pesticides Shingles Gas cylinders Batteries Tires Oil drums Used or mixed oil Bio-medical waste Construction debris (See Environmental Management Dept. at www.nhcgov.com for more information on these items.)
We will pick up electronics (televisions, computers, printers, etc.), but they must be separate from other items. Vegetation must be of the non-commercial yard debris type, not vegetation from lot clearing. Brush will need to be separated from all other types of debris and should not be bagged. Please have your debris in the right of way in front of your home by 7:00 am on Thursday. If you have any questions about pick up, please call the Public Works Department at 910-458-5816.
HELPFUL INFORMATION FROM THE KB STORMWATER & ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE Stormwater pollution can kill plants and animals that live in the water. Sediment in the water reduces light penetration and affects photosynthesis; the process that allows plants to use light as their source of energy. When green waste decays in water, it takes away vital oxygen from plants, fish and other aquatic animals. Soil makes waterways cloudy and can suffocate fish by clogging their gills.
