COFFEE WITH THE MAYOR
This Saturday, Commissioner Jim Dugan will host the “Coffee with the Mayor” session at Town Hall. He will be available from 9:00-10:00 am. The Mayor will be in a training class during this time.
FREE DEBRIS BAG FOR “GOING GREEN”
Kure Beach is going green, and we need your help. Our “free collection” of yard debris will be on Thursday, April 14, 2011. It is very difficult for our Public Works Department to process and mulch debris collected in plastic bags. Ultimately, those bags end up in the county landfill. This year, we are asking residents to use the 30-gallon paper bags designed for yard debris. ACE Hardware and Island Tackle & Hardware (True Value), on Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach, are working with the Town by selling the bags at cost. In addition, the Kure Beach Town Council will provide one free bag (upon request), per property, to encourage residents to GO GREEN and NOT use plastic bags for yard debris. PUBLIC NOTICE - JOINT WORK SESSION 3/24/11
Town Council has scheduled a joint work session at Town Hall on Thursday, March 24 at 6 pm at Town Hall for the purpose of discussing rental procedures for the Community Center. The Community Center and Parks & Recreation committees, Public Works Director and Finance Officer are to attend. All interested persons are also encouraged to attend. (Note – Council originally scheduled this for Monday, March 28th, but due to a conflict it has been rescheduled to March 24th.)
KB COMMUNITY CENTER RENTAL CHANGES
The Town Council approved the following rate increases for rental of the Community Center at the March 15 town council meeting. Increases are effective immediately.
- Increased resident rental from $15 to $40 per hour with two-hour minimum
- Increased non-resident rental from $15 to $40 per hour with two-hour minimum
- Increased commercial for-profit organization rental from $35 to $40 per hour with two-hour minimum
- Increased non-profit organization rental from $15 to $20 per hour with two-hour minimum
- Increased resident/property owner deposit from $50 to $100
- Allowed $10 non-refundable fee for each time the contract is revised
- Allowed $50 service charge for cancellation of the contract
PUBLIC HEARING - OCEAN FRONT PARK DEVELOPMENT 4/4/11
Town Council has scheduled a public hearing at Town Hall on Monday, April 4 at 5:30 pm or soon thereafter for the purpose of receiving comments on the Town’s intent to finance an amount not to exceed $600,000 for development of the Ocean Front Park. A copy of the adopted Capital Project Ordinance and Budget in the amount of $1,331,000 is on file in the office of the Town Clerk for viewing. Grants in the amount of $849,000 have been received. All interested persons are encouraged to attend. An RFP for contractors will be issued next week and the Town expects to begin work on the site in June of 2011.
PUBLIC HEARING - Chapter 19 Zoning Proposed Amendment 4/19/11
Town Council has scheduled a public hearing at Town Hall on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 pm or soon thereafter to hear public comments on proposed amendments to Code of Ordinances, Chapter 19 (Zoning), Article III (District regulations), B1, B2, B3, B4, RB1, RA1, RA2, RA2A, RA2T, RA3, and subsection 79 (Division I Generally) regarding SIC code permitted uses and Special Use. This public hearing will be the first item of business on the regular Council meeting agenda. A copy of the proposed amendments are on file in the office of the Town Clerk for viewing. All interested persons are encouraged to attend.

2012 TAX REVALUATION
The New Hanover County Tax Office is working on the 2012 Revaluation. Normally, tax revaluations are done every seven years, per state law. The County agreed to perform a special revaluation in 2011 as a result of the 2007 tax revaluation. You will be seeing members of their Appraisal Staff in your neighborhood and around your property. They will be properly identified and driving county vehicles. If someone knocks at your door claiming to work for the tax department and does not have a New Hanover County ID Card, call 911 immediately. If you have any questions about the Revaluation, please contact the New Hanover County Tax Department staff at 910-798-7300. The Tax Revaluation will be reflected in the 2012 tax bills.
KURE BEACH COMMUNITY DANCE THIS SATURDAY
Come on over to the Kure Beach Community Center this coming Saturday, March 19, for the monthly KB Community Dance which begins at 7:30 pm. It only costs $8 per person or $15 per couple to have a great time in the old town, so mark your calendars!

This is a reminder to all FULL-TIME Kure Beach residents (renters and homeowners) that you have until March 31 to pay your Kure Beach vehicle tax and receive your vehicle decal before the price increases from $5 per decal to $15 per decal.
KURE BEACH DISC GOLF COURSE AND SURROUNDING AREA TREATED FOR TICKS
On March 14, the New Hanover County Health Department treated the Kure Beach Disc Golf Course and surrounding area for ticks. Treatment consisted of placing pellets in the area, not spraying.
ANNUAL COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD DINNER & NOMINEES
This year's dinner will be held at the Kure Beach Community Center on Saturday, March 26 at 6:00 pm. Tickets for the dinner are now on sale at Town Hall for just $16.00 per person. NEW WATERCOLOR CLASSES TO BEGIN MARCH 23
Ken Withrow, award winning artist and Kure Beach resident, will be teaching new watercolor classes beginning Wednesday, March 23. Beginner class will be held each week from 9:30-11:30 am, and Intermediate class will be held each week from 12:30-2:30 pm at the KB Community Center. The North Carolina Big Sweep has been chosen as one of six finalists for a national online voting competition. The finalist with the most votes will win a $30,000 grant, while second place will receive $10,000, and third place will receive $5,000. The remaining projects will each receive $3,000. STATE TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PLAN INPUT MEETING – MARCH 23
NCDOT is seeking public input on the proposed final version to the State Transportation Improvement plan. The plan is required by the Federal government and includes all projects that will use federal aid highway funds. The public input meeting for Division 3 will be held from 4 – 7 pm on March 23, 2011 at the James Sprunt Community College Auditorium, 133 James Sprunt Drive, in Kenansville.
ANNUAL NO CHARGE DEBRIS REMOVAL – THURSDAY, APRIL 14
The Town of Kure Beach is offering No Charge Debris Removal on Thursday, April 14. This is a ONE-DAY special service. The town will NOT ACCEPT the following items: paints & pesticides, shingles, gas cylinders, tires, batteries, oil drums, used or mixed oil, bio-medical waste, construction debris, televisions and computers. Vegetation must be of the non-commercial type yard debris, not vegetation from lot clearing. Brush will need to be separated from all other types of debris and should not be bagged. Please have your debris in the right of way in front of your home by 7:00 am on the morning of pick up. If you have any questions about pick up, please call Public Works at 910-458-5816. State regulations ban certain items from landfills. As of January 1, 2011, televisions and computer equipment were added to the list of BANNED ITEMS. For that reason, the Town of Kure Beach will no longer pick up these items. Come on down for the Annual Street Festival to be held on Saturday, April 30, from 11:00 am until after dark. Please note that this year’s festival will be held at Joe Eakes Park. There’ll be some great bands and lively entertainment, delicious food, one of a kind arts & crafts for sale, a car show and activities for the kids, including two bounce castles and a huge, 18-foot inflatable slide. To top it all off, there will be fireworks on the beach after dark. So, bring your friends and family for a great time. Details are available on the Town’s website under the TOWN EVENTS tab.
